Washboard - 123 year old Susie Brunson taught me to
play the washboard. She said this was the only instrument
they had in the black community of Bamberg, SC when she
was a little girl in the 1870s. Susie was very insistent
that most of the rhythm was made with tapping rather than
scraping.
(See my Folk
Rhythms Video for instruction).
This is a Zinc King Lingerie model from the 1920s (the
size of the washboard does not improve the sound). I have
a hollowed out 2"x4" attached to the bottom
for the woodblock and an old Civil War drinking cup for
a variety of rhythmic sounds. Thimbles on your index and
middle fingers tap out the rhythm.
(Hear it on the I
Got A Bullfrog CD) |
